Happy Earth Day!

Happy Day-to-Appreciate-Mother-Earth-and-All-She-Gives-Us!! So everyone, get off those computers (I will as soon as I'm done posting), get out and enjoy the great wonders of the planet!

I, personally, plan to have nothing on in my room (with the exception of my fish tank), go for a walk outside rather than on the treadmill, have NO lights on tonight (I shall be reading by candlelight), and to read rather than watch T.V.

So what are your plans for Earth Day?

Fishies!

I really need to update my fish tank... I was able to collect 1 goldfish, 2 platies, 2 angelfish, and 10 white clouds and an algae eater; that was over a year ago. I am now down to 2 white clouds, 1 angelfish and the algae eater.

After the major cloud buffet by my angelfish (the only reason 2 survived was cause they didn't fit in his mouth...) I decided I should probably get some more fish to fill up my tank. I think my fish are getting a little lonely... and eaten...

So, now I ask you for some suggestions. Know of any awesome fish I can throw in my tank? I love color, they can't be too small (my angel fish may eat them), and they have to be able to get along with other fish, so no fin biters. hah. Oh, and it's a fresh water tank, so... fresh water fish... :)

So... yeah! After I finally decide I shall post pix of my tank and it's new addition(s).

Until next time,

School Decisions...

So I have decided two things:
1. It should be illegal to have a university exam on a Saturday night from 7:00 to 10:00... we have better things to do on a Saturday night.
2. It should be just as illegal to have a university exam on a Monday morning at 9:00... I need sleep!

Unfortunately those two times were the ones I was stuck with for my exams, but now I am done, out, and free! My next few days have already been planned: movies, junk food, sleep, partying, and finally, spending some time with my semi-neglected friends. I cannot wait to begin, but I haven't blogged in quite some time, so I thought I should start. hah.
So I am currently sitting in the cafeteria of my school, waiting to be picked up by my mother as my car has decided to not work... again... haha. Stupid wheel and it's threatening to pop off... ugh. I'm in the middle of trying to decide whether or not to stay here next year. I want to do something completely different with my life, but I've already wasted 2 years here, might as well get the diploma for something to show... right? Well, I just got an acceptance letter from one of the other collages I applied to this year, in case I made up my mind about leaving... the only thing is: tuition is way more expensive. Granted, it IS only a one year course rather than a 5-year, so that may have something to do with it... either way, its a load of money I dunno if I can afford. Oh well, I have plenty of time to decide. They don't need an answer for another month or so. Yay me.

So, for now I guess I will just sit back and relax a while, one things for sure... I definitely deserve it! Until next time,

Lazy Days...

Today was an official lazy day. I was supposed to be studying (which I did do) but then got severely side-tracked and began to watch cartoons and paint. I love to paint, but I rarely have enough time to do it. I'm thinking of taking some more time to just settle down and do what I do best: nothing! That includes painting, reading, cross-stitching and just being plain lazy. I think I deserve to take some time for myself.
These last few years have been extremely stressful and I have no idea why. There have been some days that I have been reduced to basically tears over something as stupid as a test mark. I'm doing fine in school (now) and have nothing to fear about next year but I still really don't want to go back. This probably sounds like every other person in school going "Aw Man, I hate school!" But I actually love it there, its just getting too stressful there. I'm starting to think I should take a year off and figure out what I want to do. I think I've changed my mind about 10 times about what I want to do later on in life, so it gets stressful trying to pick courses that will, indeed, help you in that field. Iunno what to do, but I know that in time I'll figure it out. :)

So, thats it for now! Until next time,

Anne Frank

Last night the movie "The Diary of Anne Frank" was on. I had never read her diary, but have always wanted to, so watching the movie was a close second. I must say though... knowing the end of the story really makes the movie that much harder to watch. I usually don't get too emotional over stories, but the fact that this was real made it that much harder to swallow, and I couldn't say to myself, "Its just a movie, its not real...".
For anyone who has lived under a rock for their whole life and has no idea who Anne Frank is, she was a remarkable little girl who hid with her family and others in a small attic in Holland from the Nazis. She was there two full years before they were ratted out and forced into camps. During her time in the attic she kept a diary about everything from her love life to the bombs crashing outside. The diary was later found and made into a book, and then a movie.

I would strongly recommend the movie to anyone although I would suggest to have a box of tissues beside you at all times; especially at the end... The cast was really well done. The people chosen look a LOT like the original people, and play their parts well.

All in all, its a great movie, and really opens up to what happened to so many innocent people. It really showed me what my family was over there fighting for, and made it so I can be proud to say "My relatives helped to stop this stupidity and give people the freedom they deserve!"

It's now available online at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/annefrank/watch.html along with the complete list of actors and characters. The cast and the people they played are compared here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/annefrank/characters.html so you can see how well the casting department did.

So go watch that movie people! It's a real eye-opener as well as a good history lesson.

Walking in the Woods

While I was doing my essay yesterday, my brain started to function strangely; I decided it was time to take a break and do something else. It was a beautiful day, so I decided that I might as well go for a walk in the woods. To me, nothing is more calming than going out with a camera to experience the beauty of nature in your own back yard. One advantage to living in the sticks: Your backyard is nothing but forest.

So, as an update, here are some of the pics I took. Enjoy!

Easter Wishes and Cupcakes!

Happy Easter everyone!

Remember how I said that I made cupcakes yesterday? Well I thought I should show you how they turned out. We made both bunnies and chicks. The bunnies look a bit strange in my opinion, but they're still amazingly cute!

The Bunny Cupcake:
To make this you'll need:
Sweetened coconut
Large marshmallows for ears (cut in small round sections)
Pink Sprinkles for coloring
Blue Smarties for eyes
Pink chocolate wafer for nose (cut to make triangles)
Small marshmallows for cheeks
Thin black licorice for whiskers.

Just roll an iced cupcake in the coconut and add features as you like. The whiskars are shoved into the cupcake rather than glued on with icing for our cupcakes; we found they stayed on longer. Extra frosting may be needed to hold some stuff on. (we learned that the hard way...)

The Chick Cupcake

To make this you'll need:
Sweetened coconut
Yellow food coloring
Brown Smarties for eyes
Orange baking gummies for beak

Dye the coconut with the food coloring and roll an iced cupcake to coat. Cut the gummies into halves for the beak. Add features as you'd like. Extra frosting may be needed for this as well.

So once again, hope everyone has a safe, fun and Happy Easter.
Until next time,

Scary Shoppers

Nothing is more frightening than working the day between holidays. For instance: the stores were open today, they were closed yesterday, and they're going to be closed tomorrow... Today was officially crazy. On holidays, people are either mean or crazy... or both! I've probably only gotten 3 nice people today, all who I wanted to hug. The major thing I hate about working retail: people don't care! Especially when they've only got a 13 hour span in 3 days to go shopping. Really though; it's the Easter holiday! If you're going to come into town and shop, at least be nice about it!

Now I obviously don't mean "everyone" when I say "people", cause there are definitely some super nice people out there who go out of their way to be nice. But as for the crazy people; well I'll give you an example.

I work with this one lady who is in her early 50's. She's super nice, and I'm always teasing her and telling her she's my work mother, cause she pretty much is. (she will be yellow, he's orange) This man came up to her looking for a spark plug, but the numbers on it didn't match up to the ones we had, so it was obvious he got it from another store. She asked him, "Can you tell me what this is from?" He replied, "Well its from here!" "Yes I know sir, but is it from a lawn mower, chain saw...?" "Lawnmower..." "Okay, do you know what model it is?" *pointing to the displays* "Well its one of those..." "Yes, but is is Yard Works, Jobmate, Troy-Bilt?" "I honestly don't think you want to help me! I'm f**kin telling you that its one of those mowers and you're not f**king doing anything to f**kin help me!" "Sir, calm down. It's just that I can't get you the right spark plug if I don't know what model it is. Certain plugs go to certain machines." "This is f**kin bull shit! You don't want to help me!" and then he slumps off mumbling curse words under his breath.

Now really... why on earth she would continue with a person like that, I don't know. Its just the type of person she is. Still, people have no right to talk to us like that, but they think we are there to simply fulfill their orders and slave over them. Well, here's the harsh reality; we're not.

The day went on and on with people yelling about products, people, placings, prices, and any other things they could think of. The pathetic thing is; basically everyone was yelling about completely stupid stuff that didn't make sense to anyone.

For anyone who doesn't understand or has never worked retail, here are a few tips:
1. We are NOT mind readers. We don't know what "that pink thing" on T.V.is. Be more specific.
2. Be nice to us, we'll be nice to you. If you're going to sit there and yell over something stupid, you lose all respect from us and make a fool out of yourself in the process.
3. Don't whistle, snap your fingers, or yell to get our attention. Whenever a guy/girl snaps or whistles at me, they get "Sorry, no dogs allowed in the store, gonna have to ask you to leave" for an answer.
4. Don't order us around! We aren't your slaves! Be nice! Say "please" and "Thank you" and we're probably going to be super nice right back.

So that was my rant for the day. I'm telling you, retail staff is definitely over worked, under paid, and poorly treated.
Until next time,
Live, Laugh, Love,
-Missy A

Movie Review: The Ugly Truth

So I'm posting way later than I usually do but I have a good excuse. This morning I made Easter cupcakes, then I worked on my French homework and my Linguistics essay, my family came over to tell us about their trip to Florida, and finally I cleaned my fish tank. So all in all it was a busy day. Unless you want to hear the scary tale of cleaning the fish tank, I'm going to do a movie review on "The Ugly Truth" starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler.

"The Ugly Truth" is your average story about a stuck-up business savvy bitch and a care-free hormone-induced male. The story is a journey of love as Mike teaches Abby how to win a man's heart through ways which force her to break out of her control-freak ways and grasp the thought of being the "secretary and the stripper".

There are many laughs shared in this hilarious comedy but not many for kids. Its rated 14+ by the Canadian film board for sexual content and coarse language, but there's a certain incident with a vibrator that would have to be up to the parent's consent. But that aside, its an awesome movie. Butler and Hiegl make a great team who leave you laughing days later.

Final rating by me: 8.5/10. I would certainly recommend it. Makes a GREAT date night movie.

Thats all for today's blog. So, until next time,
Live, Laugh, Love,
-Missy A

Playing the Fool

To those of you who don't pay attention to the calendar and just live life day-by-day, today is the first of April: April Fools Day. I personally am a huge nerd when it comes to knowing the origins of specific holidays and so I decided to do some research on this one to curb my curiosity. I was very confused however, when I found out that this holiday has no official origins; in other words, it evolved from basically no where.

The first official mention of April Fools day was in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales which was written in 1392. The "Nun's Priest's Tale" was set on the day of "March... thrirry dayes and two"; which in modern-day talk is March 32nd, or April 1st. In this part of the story, the character of the cock is tricked by a fox.

Along with this comes many other poets writing stories about tricks played on the first of April and referencing these people as the "April Fool". In 1539 a poet known as Eduard de Dene wrote wrote about a nobleman who sent his servants to do funny and stupid errands on April 1st.

The first British reference was in 1686, when a man called it "Fools Holy Day".

April Fools Day here in Canada is celebrated all day, with the pranks going from sun-up to sun-down. In other countries, however, pranks come to a halt at 12:00 noon.

Here are some April Fools jokes that made headlines:
In 1998, the famous Burger joint Burger King announced they were now offering a special "Left-Handed Whopper". The only difference between the two was that the condiments were supposed to drip out the right side of the burger when holding it. People fully believed the ads and ordered the left handed burger, and others specially ordered the right handed burger.

Another famous prank was one played in 1957. BBC did a documentary on a strange type of tree that grew spaghetti. People did not know enough about the pasta to guess otherwise. People called in asking where to get one of these spaghetti trees for themselves. They were told to "place a sprig of spaghetti on a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best".

Anyway, good luck with any pranks you try to pull on this April Fool's Day and let me know how they worked out!
So until next time,
